Here’s what popped into my head earlier as I contemplated my enormous and numerous ~Derek Hale feels~ as one tends to do: he’s got a lot of guilt going on, and it would be interesting if he could see the good he’s been able to do.

Okay, so, suppose one of the mystical creatures mentioned (or not mentioned because of their elusive nature) in the Argent bestiary is one that can create alternate universes in people’s minds— much like the so-called “Dream Lord” of Doctor Who, the djinn of Supernatural, Anyanka of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Skip (the guardian demon) of Angel, the genie of The X-Files, and, most aptly, Clarence of It’s a Wonderful Life.

Now suppose that Derek Hale makes a comment similar to George Bailey’s in It’s a Wonderful Life: that people would be better off without him. It’s not totally off-base; despite being very much not the loquacious type, it’s certainly something that others have voiced for him. Kate implies that he bears at least part of the blame for the Hale fire; Dr. Deaton states (accurately) that he’s not a very competent Alpha; Peter claims that he has a lot of self-loathing issues to work out. So, the question stands: what would things be like, if not for Derek?
