MINE AND MINE ALONE

Dear Moffat & Co.,

Acting like classless pricks isn’t going to stop me from bootlegging your show because, well, I’m bootlegging it (streaming, anyway). I like to think of a narrative as an entity that is, to some degree, separate from its creator(s); that’s part of what’s great about being a reader/viewer: the lush multiplicity of varying interpretations.

Still, I do wish you would keep your mouths shut when you feel something childish and rude coming on, or at least trash-talk privately with your mates like normal people. Meanwhile, I can’t discern which of you even bothered to watch Elementary, but— aside from the obvious fact that you did not invent Sherlock Holmes, as well as the fact that the only thing the two adaptations have in common is the time period, while every other facet and relationship differs— in case you’re wondering, Elementary is great. Lucy Liu and Johnny Lee Miller are both fabulous and their relationship is wonderfully drawn. And they manage it all without vaguely (or explicitly, if we’re talking Scandal in Belgravia) sexist/racist/heteronormative plotlines. So eat your heart out and choke on it, thanks.

Now, perhaps you haven’t seen either or one of the shows. Given that they’re both adaptations of Sherlock Holmes in the current time period, what possible differences could there be on a fundamental level, you might ask? Here are ten significant ones, obvious and not-so-obvious as the case may be:

#can we just talk about how absolutely perfect mary morstan-watson is? #out of all the people sherlock knows he sent moriarty’s book to her #he had enough faith in her to know that she’d be able to understand what needed to be done and to crack the code #mary morstan isn’t some victorian housewife who twiddles her thumbs and waits for her husband to come home #she managed to captivate and get captain john watson to fall in love with her #she is the one who doesn’t mind stepping toe to toe with sherlock holmes even though she is a lady and it isn’t her place #she is just as strong as irene adler but in a completely different way #and sherlock holmes knows it #sherlock holmes is a smart man- even he can see mary’s brilliance #i wish tumblr could (marymorstan)

Also, guys, if you haven’t seen it, Kelly Reilly (who plays Mary Morstan in the Ritchie films) was also in a movie with Andrew Scott called “Dead Bodies.” It’s a psychological thriller and she’s fantastic in it.
