Gavin Creel at Ars Nova (image and audio edited by me)
As overused as it is, “Hallelujah” will always be one of my all-time favorite songs. And I love most versions of it— from Leonard Cohen’s deceptively Gospel-esque original to Jeff Buckley’s famous cover, to the many that have stemmed from Buckley’s version, including this one. Creel’s alteration of gender pronouns in the lyrics fits well, and the imperfect, echo-y sound of the venue actually enhances the emotional effect. Enjoy!
